🏈 THREE POINTS…
… with Lafayette head coach Jon Lawson!
The Generals (7-1) are off to their best start since Jedrick Wills, Walker Wood and Landon Young were roaming the halls. They enter Friday night with a chance to sweep Class 6A, District 7. I caught up with Jon Lawson this week to discuss his team’s steady progress since he was hired in 2022 (initially on an interim basis after serving as an assistant coach for 18 seasons), how others perceive their schedule and more.
Questions and answers are lightly edited for clarity and flow.
Most teams aren’t made overnight, but not every team experiences the trajectory yours has over the last five years. With that said, this year the results of your work really seem to be showing up. What’s different?
Jon Lawson: Y’know, it seems like just yesterday we were 0-11 and getting blown out every game. (Note: Lafayette’s record in Lawson’s first season). Part of that progression has been getting the right pieces in as far as the coaches were concerned, and actually having kids that decided to be loyal to the program and not run off and try to get the glory somewhere else, chasing that instant gratification. These guys have absolutely put the work in all summer long, they decided they were gonna work together and lead this team and it’s showing its true colors right now. …
I would say the last five years or so, it’s been worse than ever. I can honestly say, before every year, we’ve lost one of our best players to another team in some capacity but we’ve found a way to move forward. Even this past year, we lost two guys that would’ve started for us easily: one was a defensive tackle and the other was our leading receiver last year. … The guys that are staying and grinding, they’re now getting rewarded. I wish all those other guys the best of luck, who decided to go elsewhere, I hope they fulfill their dreams on that other path. But I’m so proud of those guys who’ve stayed, who realized this is hard work and if you really want to stick together and be really good, this is how you do it. You grow together, you fight together and produce the mentality that you need — together.
Skeptics, I think, would be quick to attack your strength of schedule. That might be fair, but I might counter that you’ve gone about .500 against similarly weighted schedules the last couple of years and weren’t in position to sweep your district. How do you view it?
Jon Lawson: It’s always been about, how good can we be? What can we put together regardless of who we’re playing? Even to this week, no matter who we play, we’ve got to put our best version of ourselves out there. If we do what we need to do, good things can happen.
In our opener against North Oldham — they were ranked in some capacity and we weren’t — we went out and played a very sound game. That probably gave us confidence that we may have not had prior to that, but we really started to believe in ourselves after that victory. (Note: North Oldham is 7-1 and currently ranked in the media and RPI Class 4A top 10s.)
Even if we would’ve lost that game, though, I truly believe that their belief in our process would’ve carried us. These players have been around me for four years and we’ve gone from 2-9 to whatever we’ve been the last two years, and now if we lose, you can see these guys keep believing in their worth as they put in that work. What’s happened is, even if we lose a game now, we don’t look at it and go, “Oh, it’s old Lafayette, we’re done.” We played really good against West Jess. We had a couple of interceptions returned for touchdowns at the end of the game but we were neck and neck with them the old game. Their confidence never wavered. That was a 10-9 game until two minutes left and we had an opportunity to win. (Note: Lafayette lost 24-9 to West Jessamine, currently 8-0 and top 10 in the media and RPI Class 5A top 10s.)
Let’s talk about some of your guys. You’ve got two running backs whose stats pop out, but I have to ask: when your quarterback’s name is “Onono” that’s gotta lead to some fun in the locker room, yea?
Jon Lawson: (laughing) Oh yes sir. That was funny. He’s a great kid — quiet. He played a little JV for us last year and he took his bumps and lumps, but I think the way our team is built, we establish such a good run game most games that when it’s his time to shine and things open up, he can be that guy. He’s just gaining more experience and confidence going into his junior year. I’m looking forward to see more great things that Mr. (Emmanuel) Onono can do because by all definitions, he’s “Oh yes yes,” he can do it all. I’m very excited for him and his future.
It was no surprise to us that Harrison (Stephens) and Tyree (Richardson) can do what they can do. We’ve seen them since back in their middle school days and again, I’m glad they stayed and decided to work through the process with us. They’re different runners but yet they’re the same because they run really, really hard no matter what. And I love that we have that ability to change it up with either one of those guys, and we can add Tristin (Simpson) in there, Domo (Dominic Faulkner) as well to change it up for us.
Establishing that run game has definitely made us a different team, because in years past we tried to be a pass team. We had dudes but if you’re going three and out and stopping the clock all the time, your defense is always out there. It’s completed flipped from years past. We’re driving, wearing defenses down and our defense is pretty fresh, which speaks to why we’ve created so many turnovers. (Note: Lafayette co-leads 6A with 10 forced fumbles along with Oldham County and is fifth with eight interceptions). Our defensive coordinator Jason Fergerson has also brought in a scheme that really fits our personnel and it shows. He’s made a difference in how our guys play such a relentless defense the way they do.
