ABOUT KHSD

Kentucky High School Daily is a newsletter dedicated to high school basketball (boys and girls) and football in Kentucky, owned and written by Joshua Moore.

My goal is to inform and entertain athletes, parents, coaches, school administrators, fans, college recruiters and anyone else who wants to keep up with the nonstop world of Kentucky high school athletics.

SUBSCRIPTION INFO

Three are three subscription options: $8.59/monthly, $60.60/annual and free.

Monthly and annual subscribers: receive complete access to every issue of Kentucky High School Daily, delivered straight to their inbox 5x a week. They also can read any past issue on this website. Paid subscribers also will have as much of as ad-free experience as possible (you will still see any presenting sponsorship).

Free subscribers: receive access to two issues each week and limited/preview-access editions. If you like those, I really think you’d enjoy the total package!

Those prices are well below the industry standards for a newsletter like this and reflect what I think is an incredible value for a reader based on the amount of dedicated reporting and writing that will be provided. (Observant readers will note that these prices also are similar to two of Kentucky’s area codes; they pay tribute to the two areas of Kentucky that I’ve called home.)

There is a significant discount for annual subscribers. An annual subscription reflects a savings of about $43/year!

Click here to subscribe. Your support is appreciated.

WHAT KHSD IS

  • Something you’ve asked for. Over the last several years, I’ve spoken with hundreds of people who’ve expressed frustration with the current sports news environment. Social media has transformed how we receive and engage with all news; I’d argue for the worse, but my opinion is irrelevant. It’s more difficult than ever to keep up with the things we care about because the default on platforms like Facebook, X, TikTok, etc. is constant noise.

Kentucky High School Daily is a product designed for the person who wants a one-stop shop for high school basketball and football coverage, 5x a week, delivered straight to them. Think of it like getting the high school sports page sent straight to your door, just in a digital form. You don’t need to follow a new account on social media or click through a bunch of pop-up ads to read it: you simply click here to subscribe.

  • A well-trained source you can trust. My background is in newspaper journalism and I will approach and maintain this newsletter with a level of integrity and scrutiny befitting that background. I am a journalist. I hope to have a little more fun than might traditionally have been possible in a newspaper environment, but I won’t engage in gossip or unverifiable rumors. Your teams, athletes and all other related parties will be treated with respect.

  • An independent media outlet owned and operated by a single part-timer. I’m a journalist with almost two decades of experience, but I’m still a human who will screw up. Please bear with and, more importantly, correct me when needed ([email protected])! Above all, I want to report accurate scores, stats, news and events while telling as many cool stories about Kentucky high school basketball and football as I can.

  • A place for AI-free writing. I may use artificial intelligence to gather and/or sort information. It will be rigorously screened, if so — I remain very hesitant to even do that, based on haphazard trial runs. I WILL NEVER use artificial intelligence to generate writing published on this (or any other) platform. One, I love the sight of my own words too much to consider doing that. More importantly, your time is valuable and shouldn't be spent reading A.I.-generated garbage, here or anywhere else on the internet. You deserve words written by a human for humans, not a regurgitated box score designed to keep you on a page as long as possible so an advertiser can maybe get half-a-penny out of you.

  • Mostly not free (for now). Production of this newsletter involves a significant amount of information gathering, interviewing, writing and packaging conducted by a single person (me, Joshua Moore). That costs time as well as the various monetary costs of consistently delivering all of that to you. My long-term goal is to grow a subscriber list that will attract significant sponsorship that can meaningfully reduce or, even better, eliminate the price of a subscription for every reader. (Hit me up, sponsors!) So even if you aren’t interested in paying for a subscription, signing up for the free tier helps!

  • Something you’ll be excited to see. My goal every time I hit “publish” is to put something in your inbox that you can’t wait to read. Not everything in a given newsletter will be for you, but my goal is for at least one item in every newsletter to inform or entertain every subscriber. I don’t wanna put crap in your inbox — please let me know if I do!

WHAT KHSD ISN’T

  • A place for consistent/comprehensive coverage of other high school sports. In an ideal world, I would provide equal and frequent coverage of soccer, volleyball, esports, softball and all the other sports sponsored by the KHSAA. Some of those sports are among my favorites to watch and write about, and I will infrequently provide light coverage of them (particularly during postseason events). But this newsletter is focused on Kentucky high school basketball (boys and girls) and football because:

    • 1.) Introducing project creep from the onset is no good for my sanity nor the product you would receive. A more focused newsletter out of the gate will be a much better newsletter for all of us.

    • 2.) Every analytic I’ve ever seen in almost 20 years of working as a journalist on the internet suggests that basketball and football are, by far, the things most people are willing to pay to read about. So, at least as I build a business from the ground floor, that’s where my focus will be.

  • A replacement for your local newspaper or similar media outlet. I want Kentucky High School Daily to provide high-level statewide coverage of high school sports in Kentucky. It is not a substitute for the valuable local prep sports coverage that may still be provided by a news source in your community. If you still have that — I know many don’t, and I hate that — cherish and support it!

  • A place for breaking news coverage. Depending on how you look at it, this is either my second or third job (yup, I’m a middle-age millennial). Most of what you read will be written in the evenings or weekends, likely aided by a McDonald’s Coke. If something’s happening in real-time and you’d like my coverage, it’s always possible I may be talking about it on Twitter.

  • Hiring. If this newsletter blows up, I would love to provide opportunities for up-and-comers and other sportswriters throughout Kentucky to contribute. That’s just not realistic to entertain out of the gate.

  • A place for photography (unless provided with permission by third party for credit). See above.

  • A record book. While I will strive for strict historical accuracy and record-keeping that, over time, should prove valuable to folks, this newsletter isn’t the official source for KHSAA records. It is the responsibility of the KHSAA to vet and maintain accurate records as well as that of school administrators and other assigned parties to submit them.

  • A recruiting website. I will be delighted to report on commitments to colleges made by high school athletes in Kentucky. I will mention where players have committed frequently in my reporting. I may occasionally write commitment ceremony stories if they rise to a level of extreme or unusual import (my personal judgment). I will not engage in blow-by-blow reporting of evaluation camps, visits, hearsay, etc., or make a regular habit of covering commitment ceremonies. The internet doesn’t need another star-rating-obsessed website.

  • A travel ball/middle school/youth sports website.

  • Really, much of a website at all. While there is a website archive where anyone who subscribes can access past issues, my goal right now isn’t to build a fully functional website. Kentucky High School Daily is intended to be a daily email experience, akin to what getting a newspaper in the mail used to be like. As it grows, this is something I may eventually revisit.
